v1.4.0

fabric-cicd releases Oct 7, 2026 4/5 · Tier A CI/CDAPI AutomationReal-Time Intelligence release-notes

fabric-cicd v1.4.0 adds deployment support for Graph Model and Cosmos DB items, alongside dynamic replacement variables in bulk publish mode and Python 3.14 compatibility.

Deployment behavior becomes safer and more predictable: dynamic variables are validated before deployment, paginated reports publish serially to reduce intermittent failures, and fixes address KQL Queryset cluster resolution, OneLake path bindings, Activator workspace IDs, environment-variable replacement, and parameterized Data Pipeline payloads.

The release also pins jsonpath-ng to avoid an upstream regression that could corrupt payloads during
key_value_replace
parameterization. An end-to-end deployment tutorial improves adoption, but teams should retest existing pipelines because new item types and variable validation can expose previously hidden configuration errors.

New Fabric item support, dynamic deployment variables, Python compatibility, and deployment reliability materially expand fabric-cicd.

FabCon Barcelona 2026 Recap

Tabular Editor Oct 6, 2026 4/5 · Tier A CI/CDSemantic ModelAI Readiness announcement

PBIP is generally available as Microsoft's endorsed text-based Power BI project format for source control, making structured semantic-model and report files preferable to opaque PBIX files in Git and AI-assisted workflows. The recap also describes GA Power BI authoring skills, the authoring MCP server, and Desktop Bridge.

Fabric Apps are positioned for broader use, including upcoming Power BI Pro and PPU availability, while Fabric SQL databases are included within stated limits. Microsoft is joining the vendor-neutral Apache Ossie effort, adding DAX support and a two-way converter for semantic models, although translated SQL and DAX expressions are not automatically guaranteed to remain equivalent.

Ontologies can use metrics imported from multiple semantic models, and semantic views are being developed to place business meaning closer to lakehouse data. Fabric Apps and AI-generated reports still introduce quality, security, governance, and data-literacy risks; preview availability and release timing must be verified before planning adoption.

Reports substantive GA, licensing, semantic interoperability, ontology, and AI authoring changes beyond conference promotion.

Fabric Influencers Spotlight: September 2026

Fabric Updates Oct 5, 2026 2/5 · Tier B Community community-event

Fabric Influencers Spotlight: September 2026 curates 30 community submissions across Fabric administration, CI/CD, OneLake security, capacity governance, migration, Spark, warehousing, AI, real-time intelligence, and Power BI.

The collection points to potentially valuable practitioner material, including fabric-cicd deployment patterns, Direct Lake security behavior, Liquid Clustering, Workspace Identity, and Databricks interoperability. However, the spotlight itself is an index rather than a technical analysis: implementation limits, costs, benchmarks, and evidence remain in the linked contributions.

Community roundup surfaces 30 Fabric submissions but provides little original technical depth or measured implementation detail.

ApproximateDistinctCount In Power BI Is Sometimes Slower Than DistinctCount

Crossjoin Oct 11, 2026 5/5 · Tier A Semantic ModelDirect Lake deep-dive

APPROXIMATEDISTINCTCOUNT is not universally faster than DISTINCTCOUNT. Direct Lake can apply optimizations to exact distinct counts that the approximate implementation cannot reproduce, particularly for low-cardinality columns.

In the tested 11.7-million-row taxi model, counting two VendorID values across 85,562 result rows took 188 ms with DISTINCTCOUNT versus 688 ms with APPROXIMATEDISTINCTCOUNT. CPU rose from 110 ms to 547 ms, while memory increased from approximately 8 MB to 410 MB. The approximate function can still be valuable for very high-cardinality columns with millions of distinct values, but its crossover point depends on the data and query shape.

The implementation is changing as optimizations roll out, so benchmark representative production queries before replacing existing measures.

Measured Direct Lake results show when approximate distinct counts consume more time and memory than exact counts.

Understanding DAX contracts when using AI

SQLBI Oct 5, 2026 3/5 · Tier B Semantic ModelAI Readiness opinion

DAX contracts define the business rules a measure must satisfy before AI generates or changes its code. They sit between vague model documentation and an implementation algorithm, specifying filter behavior, ranking population, tie handling, blanks, totals, and visual context.

The practical shift is to prompt AI to discover and formalize these rules first, then generate DAX against the contract. The contract becomes the reviewable artifact: when requirements change, update the contract and verify the measure rather than treating generated code as the source of truth.

Provides a useful AI-era DAX specification practice, but lacks measured platform behavior or implementation detail.
